Farmers from Mayawati's village move court

Lucknow: At least 50 farmers from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati's native village Badalpur in Greater Noida Wednesday moved the Allahabad High Court against acquisition of some 203 hectares of land and sought its restoration.

They alleged that their agricultural land was acquired by the state government in the name of "industrial development" in and around Badalpur, but it was sold to builders and real estate developers for residential complexes.

The farmers accused the government of using the "urgency" clause for expeditious acquisition as they had done in the case of land takeover in Noida Extension, where certain procedures were bypassed under the same pretext.

According to petitioners' counsel B.M. Rizvi, the petition is likely to come up for hearing Friday.
