PCMC seeks one year to demolish illegal structures

The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has filed an appeal before the Bombay high court seeking one year extension for the civic administration to take action against the unauthorized constructions in Pimpri-Chinchwad.
PCMC’s legal advisor Ajay Suryavanshi said, “The high court had directed the PCMC in February to take action against unauthorized constructions in six months. This time limit ends on Wednesday, August 3. Hence, the PCMC filed an appeal last Friday, seeking a year’s extension.”
“The PCMC, till now, has issued notices to over 30,000 unauthorized constructions in the municipal limits. However, 70,000 to 80,000 more unauthorized structures have to be issued notices for which the civic body has sought more time,” Suryavanshi added.
Dilip Kudale, coordinator, engineering department, PCMC, said, “There are a total of 1.10 lakh unauthorized constructions in the Pimpri-Chinchwad township. A total of 30,765 notices have been issued till today under section 53 of the Maharashtra Regional Town Planning (MRTP) Act. The owners have been given a month’s time to remove their unauthorized structures, failing which, the civic administration will remove them and recover the cost from the owners.”
The civic body has started sending the notices by post. “On most occasions, people are not home during the day. Sometimes people refuse to accept the notice. So, the PCMC has decided to send the notices by post”, said Kudale.
The general body had approved a resolution to send a letter to the state government demanding a regularisation of unauthorized constructions in the Pimpri-Chinchwad township. But the state government rejected this demand. Now, the civic body is set to send a revised demand again to the state government.
