The state government has instructed the district collectors of Dhule, Nashik, Aurangabad and Raigad to initiate the process of acquiring 62,440 hectares of land for the Union government’s Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) project.

The order signed by Pravinsinh Pardeshi, state principal secretary of forest and revenue, said that setting up mega industrial parks along the corridor would fetch a total investment of around Rs 1.28 lakh crore and generate employment for 23 lakh people in the state. For basic infrastructural development in these districts, an investment of around Rs 5,000 crore would be required, the order states. The total cost of the DMIC project is expected to be $90 billion and it will be partly funded by the Japanese government.

Dhule district collector Gokul Mavare said orders were issued to the government officials after a meeting held on July 29. “As many as 53 officials would be recruited, by August 15, on a contract basis especially for the DMIC project. The land acquisition process will be initiated after that and will be completed in three years,” he said.

Raigad, Nashik and Aurangabad are industrialised regions hosting many MNCs. However, Dhule, which is 360 km north of Pune, is an underdeveloped district, with a dry and hot climate. It stands to benefit the most from the DMIC project.

“In places like Pune, the land near the city is agricultural and acquisition is opposed by farmers,” Mavare said. “The case is just the opposite in Dhule. The land is barren with little agriculture to show for. The farmers there are in favour of the DMIC project. Many of them have expressed willingness to sell their land for industrial development.”

Mavare said two major power generation projects will also come up in Dhule. “While the state government is setting up one solar power plant with an installed capacity of 150 MW, A coal-based thermal power plant of 3,300 MW is set to come up on a 400-hectare land, which will need an investment of Rs 20,000 crore. The land has already been identified and we will soon receive Rs 50 crore for initiating the land acquisition process,” he said.

The government has intimated farmers in Dhule abou the proposed thermal power plant.
